I have done this for my site and can share the code back to you if needed. It would need some productization as it is for the view I currently use (logo on left). It also does not take advantage of the predictive search capability. But the code works for me as it is. And also works for mobile. However, I do not like making custom code changes as it makes migrating to new version difficult.
This is to follow best practices for ecommerce websites:
Improved User Experience: A visible search box makes it immediately clear that customers can search for products directly, saving them an extra step. This is particularly important for users who come with a specific product or type of product in mind—they can start typing right away.
Encourages Product Discovery: A search box in clear view signals to users that they can explore and find items quickly. Especially for eCommerce stores with a wide range of products, it promotes product discovery and can increase conversions.
Reduces Friction: Every additional click or action can reduce the likelihood of engagement. A visible search box cuts down on clicks and keeps the process smooth.
Best Practice for Mobile and Desktop: On mobile, where space is limited, some sites use a search icon, but for desktop versions, a visible search box is generally the standard since there’s often enough screen real estate.
Improves Accessibility: For accessibility, a visible search box can make it easier for all users, including those using assistive devices, to quickly find what they need.
